Scope and Content

Under the 1887 Edmunds-Tucker Law, commissioners appointed by the supreme court and district courts in the Territory of Utah had and could exercise all the powers and jurisdiction held by justices of the peace in the Territory. After statehood in 1896, jurisdiction passed from U.S. Commissioners to local justices of the peace.

This volume dockets actions taken in civil and criminal cases before Commissioner W. C. Jennings in Salt Lake County. Each case recorded includes parties' names, charge, date and actions taken. Criminal cases pertain to many different offenses including adultery, rape, disturbing the peace, embezzlement, and petit larceny.

Arrangement

Chronological by date.

Research Note

Pages 1-70 and 221-222 are missing while pages 147-220 and 360-433 are blank.
