Scope and Content

Under the 1887 Edmunds-Tucker Law, commissioners appointed by the supreme court and district courts in the Territory of Utah had and could exercise all the powers and jurisdiction held by justices of the peace in the Territory. After statehood in 1896, jurisdiction passed from U.S. Commissioners to local justices of the peace.

This is U.S. Commissioner J.W. Greenman's criminal docket book. It serves as a register of actions for criminal cases. Information present includes defendant, offense, name of complainant, and a record of proceedings showing date and a summary of actions in the case. Cases include unlawful cohabitation, adultery, fornication, counterfeiting, perjury, housebreaking, polygamy, and others.
